Parking Lot Safety

We are most vulnerable while getting in and out of our vehicles. Please keep the following in mind:

REMEMBER:

  • Park close to the destination

  • Park in a well-lit location

    • Think ahead even if it is not dark yet

  • Avoid parking around blind corners on the sides of businesses

  • Lock your car immediately when entering and exiting

  • Set your fob to only open the driver’s side door so that no one can jump in on the other side

    • Do the same with your door locks when they open from the interior

  • Watch big vehicles blocking yours - this could conceal an attack

  • Do not apply makeup

  • Do not fiddle around and allow yourself to be distracted

  • Have your key fob ready in your hand before you walk out of the building to your vehicle

  • Be extra aware if loading a child or children since you stopped for an extended length of time you are more vulnerable and you have the most precious cargo in the world

  • Realize what you look like

    • Are you an easy target?

    • Do you look like you would be a good “score”?

    • Did you just leave the bank or ATM?

  • Avoid pulling notes off of your windshield immediately as it could be a tactic - move your car to a new, safer location

  • If you’re summoned by a stranger, do not get out or roll down the window. Drive away. You don’t know who they are or what their intentions are.

  • Use vehicles, shopping carts, or anything else in the area as an obstacle in the event you are approached - maintain distance at all times

  • When in doubt, walk out with someone or ask security to take you to your car

  • Vehicles with occupants that have not moved that are sitting close to you should be avoided at all times

  • Use any and all objects as weapons

  • Be aware of loading cargo while you are stopped because you are more vulnerable

  • Do not use headphones or earbuds - you may not hear a potential attacker

  • Move quickly, keep your head up and carry yourself with confidence

  • Do NOT use your cell phone

    • Calls and texts can wait

    • Call family or a friend prior to leaving your destination and after you arrive so that they will know you are safe

    • Do not call while you are in the car, distracted and vulnerable

    • You may need the phone to dial 911

    • You can pretend you are speaking to someone for added security as a deterrent

  • Do not adjust your mirrors if you are not in a safe place

    • If they have been moved it could be a trap

    • Go to the closest place that you feel safe to adjust them
