Safety & Security Tip #2 - Street Numbers
Can I find your home from the street?
EMS, fire, police, and the pizza guy will all thank us in case of emergency (hungry kids are an emergency), if your street number is clearly visible from the street. There are several things you can do to ensure that your number is properly displayed:
Font - Pick a clear, easy to read font.
Kern - Make sure that the numbers are all evenly spaced from one another. There's a difference between 12345 and 123 45. Your life or your UberEats order could depend on it!
Contrast - It should stick out from your house.
Location - Place it on your curb as well as mailbox. Put it everywhere you can, but leave out your name. You don't want a stranger to come to the door and say, "I have a delivery for Mrs. Smith. It is quite heavy. Do you want me to set it inside?" in order to gain entry or similar tactic.
Light - Make sure there is a light on it from dusk to dawn.
Size - I recommend that you measure the distance from where your numbers are on your home to the center of the street. Then, you can calculate the minimum size needed:
Distance from Midpoint Size of Lettering
0-69 feet 3+ inches
70-110 feet 4+ inches
111-132 feet 5+ inches
133-160 feet 6+ inches
161-300 feet 8+ inches
301+ feet Get a gate with 10+ inch numbers
Please don't forget to check your CC&Rs and submit an ACC approval if applicable prior to making any changes.
